Voice from the Village - Monthly Superintendent Message - February 2019 - A. Robert Gregory

February 2019

Dear Families and Friends of MPTCS,

This month we recognize and celebrate the amazing accomplishments, contributions, and history of African American people, many of whom, arrived on American shores against their will but wove their way into the fabric of American Society.  We remain the beneficiaries of our ancestors’ struggle for freedom; their dreams and prayers.  Together we have a unique opportunity to build upon our legacy by reimagining our schools and ensuring they become places that nurture the brilliance in every child, while creating venues where our scholars find inspirational and exciting ways to express their intellect.

In recognition of our 20th Anniversary, I’d like to honor and thank our founding CEO, Dr. Karen Thomas, and members of our founding Board of Trustees who have served this community for the past 20 years: Board Chairman, Greg Collins; Chair of our Personnel Committee, David Blount, and Ernestine Watson, current chair of the MPTCS Foundation Board.  We remain the custodians of their belief, “it takes a whole village to raise a child.”

There is a rising tide forming out of the abyss of mediocrity we’ve experienced the past several years and thevillage is on the move.    One of our remarkable educators from MPTCS STEAM Academy, Ms. Shahidah Dunbar, was named Teacher of the Year.  Ms. Dunbar, a true equity warrior, has been a part of the village the last 14 years and epitomizes our core belief that, all children can learn.”

Ms. Juli-Anne Benjamin, our Dean of Academics at MPTCS PAC Academy, was recently chosen to be an officer on the Board of Directors for the International Literacy Association.  She is bringing her love and joy for teaching and learning to other educators in the village by collaborating with the academic leadership team to launch the first EdCamp MPTCS on February 22, 2019.  MPTCS is joining the EdCamp movement to empower our own staff to search for voice and choice in their professional learning, more information will be shared via email.

Our high school Boys Basketball team  was recently named Champions of the Charter School League and boasted a 9-1 record.  Congratulations to our head coach, Dean McGee, and his student athletes.  Ms. Dunbar, Deans Benjamin and McGee, are a few examples of the champions for change that exist here in the village.  They are committed, as we all are, to serving our scholars by providing them with the tools they need to live successful lives as adults.

I end my message with a quote from our nation’s first African American President, Barak Obama, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

As always, a better tomorrow, starts with us today
