About Sankofa Academy

Sankofa Academy is the newest addition to the Marion P. Thomas Charter School Village, set to open its doors on August 26, 2024. Located at 88-108 Shipman St. in Newark's Central Ward, the academy is just minutes from downtown Newark. The inaugural cohort will comprise 75 students ranging from kindergarten to 2nd grade, with plans to add one grade level each year.

Inspiration and Focus

The academy draws its name and inspiration from the majestic Sankofa bird, a mythical symbol from West African folklore. This bird, with its feet firmly planted forward and its head turned backward, embodies the wisdom of looking to the past to forge a brighter future. This profound philosophy underscores Sankofa Academy's mission to harness historical lessons to guide, inspire, and empower the next generation of leaders.

Leadership

Principal Fatara Hutchins, a dynamic leader with nearly two decades of experience with the Newark Board of Education, will lead the academy. Born and raised in Newark, Ms. Hutchins has served as both a teacher and an administrator, honing her skills and expertise in educational leadership. Her extensive experience provides her with a deep understanding of the educational landscape and the unique needs of the community she serves.

Approach to Learning

Sankofa Academy's educational philosophy is centered on preparing students to be global, productive citizens and independent, reflective learners, particularly advanced in science, math, and art. The highest priority is student achievement through the education of the whole child and the integration of academic, social, and civic development. This will be achieved through a strong academic literacy program that fosters deep and critical learning, meaningful professional learning opportunities for staff that are culturally and linguistically responsive, and creating multiple programs for parental involvement in their children’s education. Additionally, the academy is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment where children can excel both academically and personally.

Social & Emotional Learning

The academy also emphasizes the importance of social and emotional learning. Recognizing that successful education demands character development, Sankofa Academy will help children develop skills to manage their emotions, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts nonviolently, and make responsible decisions. By creating a supportive learning environment and integrating social and emotional learning into the curriculum, students will learn to collaborate, communicate, and resolve conflicts through team projects.

Out-of-Classroom Experiences

Sankofa Academy values the importance of learning beyond the classroom. Students will participate in field trips that are aligned with the curriculum, providing hands-on experiences that reinforce their classroom learning. Additionally, guest speakers who reflect the diverse backgrounds of our students will visit the academy, exposing students to a variety of role models and professions. These speakers will help students envision their futures by showcasing different career paths and successes. The academy will also encourage students to explore the city of Newark and its rich culture, helping them connect with their community and appreciate the history and diversity of their hometown.
