Special Education Programs

MPTCS’  innovative model aligns an excellent education with the necessary family supports to make sure each and every child can succeed. It's our vision that our scholars will have an unimpeded path to unlocking their limitless potential. As such, MPTCS has developed its special education instructional policies and subsequent procedures to align with all pertinent Special Education Regulations as outlined in the New Jersey Department of Education Regulations N.J.A.C. 6A:14.

Our Special Education program offers a range of instructional services for children with disabilities in all grades in the areas of reading,  language arts, and math. Instruction includes in-class support, resource pull out, and a self-contained class, based on the child’s level of need and IEP goals and objectives.

Child Find
Identify l Locate l Evaluate

The New Jersey State Department of Education has established "Child Find", a free public awareness and referral service, to assist families, professionals and interested individuals by identifying available early intervention, preschool children with disabilities, and special education programs and services throughout the state. As part of the federal Child Find requirement, Marion P Thomas Charter School (MPTCS) makes efforts to seek and identify children with disabilities who are entitled to Special Education services. If your child currently receives Early Intervention (for children ages 0 to the child’s third birthday), your Early Intervention coordinator will facilitate a referral to the school district of residence with your consent, prior to your child turning three. For families enrolled at MPTCS, the district provides free appropriate public education (FAPE) to eligible pupils ages 3 through 21. We urge parents/guardians concerned about their child’s suspected or known disability to write a referral letter requesting an evaluation. Referral letters should be addressed to Dr. Pia Moore Director of Special Services at 125 Sussex Ave. Newark NJ 07103.  Please include your name and contact information, your child's name and date of birth, your concerns, and any other relevant information. For more information, please call the Department of Special Services at 973-621-0060 ext 2214
