K-8 Mathematics

Our vision is to provide a high-quality thinking and mathematics experience that equips students to have the discussion, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary for everyday life, and the perseverance to  build the mathematical mindsets for college and career success.

We will do this by embedding transferable skills, authentic practice, and culturally responsive pedagogy throughout our curriculum, grounded in a sense of purpose and meaning.  will achieve our vision by:

  • Offering a balanced and comprehensive mathematics curriculum that includes rigorous instructional materials.
  • Employing teaching techniques that elevates student voice through planned questioning and purposeful mathematical dialogue.
  • Implementing several checks for understanding through the course of the instructional block.
  • Using differentiation through small group instruction and tailored intervention to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment rooted in productive struggle, where students are encouraged to express themselves and learn from each other.
  • Partnering with families and the community to support student learning.

9-12 Mathematics

Here at Marion P. Thomas Charter High School, we are dedicated to providing an exceptional mathematics education that equips students with the skills needed for success in both academics and daily life. To ensure continuous growth, we periodically assess students against grade-level expectations, using four annual LinkIT assessments to track proficiency and predict performance on state exams. This structured approach allows for regular progress monitoring and targeted support. Our vision is to deliver a high-quality math experience that fosters critical thinking, meaningful discussion, and problem-solving skills. We achieve this by:

  • Offering a balanced and comprehensive mathematics curriculum that includes our HMH platform as well as enrichment and growth through our IXL platform.

  • Employing teaching techniques that elevates student voice through planned questioning and purposeful mathematical dialogue as well as class movement.

  • Implementing data driven instruction throughout the year.

  • Using grouping strategies that include data driven scaffolding through our Linkit platform.

  • Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where risk taking is part of every classroom and students have the confidence to make mistakes, learn from them and grow.

  • Sharing data and educating all stakeholders in our current standing and goals for the future.

The Math Department utilizes the following platforms and resources:

  • HMH Mathematics: "Into Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry" curriculum for core instruction.

  • LinkIt Platform: For assessment and data monitoring.

  • IXL Math: Accessible to students via Clever, providing practice in various math skills.

  • Khan Academy: Supplemental resources for additional practice and concept reinforcement.
