The 2017 Newark High School Cook-Off, was held May 6, at Marion P. Thomas Charter High School of Culinary and Performing Arts. The event was sponsored by the Newark Branch NAACP and Whole Foods Market, and hosted by New Jersey Youth Empowerment, the charitable foundation that supports the Newark NAACP's youth programs.
MPTCS culinary scholar, Kedegia Williams, won third place, a bronze medal winner and Quadir Walker won honorable mention. As a bronze medalist, Ms. Williams will receive a $250 scholarship and a trip to the national NAACP convention in Baltimore, MD.
The five-student competition included young chefs from the Newark Institute of Culinary Education at West Side High School and Essex County 13th Street Tech.
MPTCS students also streamed the event live on Facebook. Their video can be seen on the Marion P. Thomas Facebook page.The scholarships and all the provisions for the competition were donated by Whole Foods Market, which is also underwriting an all expenses paid trip for the three medal winners to the national NAACP convention in Baltimore MD, July 20-23. They will be able to observe, among other things, the NAACP ACT-SO (Afro Academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) high school culinary competition.
